Menemsha Harbour, Martha's Vineyard

A live webcam on the fishing dock at Menemsha, Martha's Vineyard, boats, traps and the evening light.

About this view

Menemsha is a fishing village in the town of Chilmark, at the western end of Martha's Vineyard, and this live cam watches Dutcher Dock from the fish market, where the boats land their catch.

Draggers and lobster boats come and go with the tide, traps stack on the pier, and in the evening people bring supper from the fish market to the beach to watch the sun go down over Vineyard Sound, one of the few west-facing shores on the island. The village has been on screen before: Jaws was filmed on Martha's Vineyard in 1974, and Menemsha's harbour stood in for the fictional Amity in several scenes, which still brings a trickle of visitors looking for Quint's dock.

The island keeps Eastern Time, UTC−5, UTC−4 in summer, so the sunset here comes after midnight in Europe. Menemsha is busiest from June to September, when the island's 20,000 year-round residents are outnumbered several times over; out of season the harbour belongs to the fishing families who have worked it for generations.
