From the porch of the Oak Bluffs Inn, this live camera looks along Circuit Avenue, the main street of Oak Bluffs, the liveliest of the six towns on Martha's Vineyard: the shopfronts and ice-cream windows, the summer crowds off the ferries, and the Flying Horses at the bottom of the street, the oldest working carousel in the United States, built in 1876.
The avenue runs on the ferry timetable: quiet in the morning, packed from lunch to the last boat in July and August, and nearly asleep by November. Behind it lie the gingerbread cottages of the Campground, more than 300 of them, lit with lanterns one night each August in a tradition older than the street.
Oak Bluffs keeps Eastern Time, UTC−5, UTC−4 in summer, so a European evening lands on the afternoon rush and a British midnight on the ice-cream queue. Late June to early September is the season; the island empties after Columbus Day.
