About this view
Massachusetts Maritime Academy trains officers for the merchant marine on a 54-acre campus at Buzzards Bay, at the western mouth of the Cape Cod Canal, and this live cam watches its football field.
The academy was founded in 1891 as the Massachusetts Nautical Training School, first based in Boston, and its cadets still live as a regiment and spend part of each year at sea aboard a training ship. Football has been played here since 1973, and the Buccaneers compete in the NCAA's Division III: the stands fill on autumn Saturdays, and through the week the field carries practices, drills and the rest of campus life.
Buzzards Bay keeps Eastern Time, UTC−5, UTC−4 in summer, so a Saturday afternoon game kicks off in the European evening. The football season runs from September to November. The canal beside the campus, opened in 1914, saves ships the long passage round the outside of Cape Cod.
