This live cam looks over the Place de l'Hôtel de Ville, the parade ground of the most ambitious reconstruction in post-war France. Auguste Perret's team rebuilt 133 hectares of city centre in reinforced concrete, and UNESCO listed the result as World Heritage in 2005 — a rare twentieth-century town centre on that list.
The city hall's tower rises 72 metres over the square, finished in 1958. Below it the square works as squares do: markets and events, skateboards, people cutting across on their way somewhere, the fountains running through summer.
The light is the thing here — Perret's concrete goes from cold grey to warm gold as the sun drops (UTC+1, +2 in summer). Mid-May to mid-September is the clearest stretch.
