About this view
Every photograph of Taipei 101 seems to come from the same place: the photography platform on the Xiangshan trail, Elephant Mountain, where this live camera stands. The tower stands in the middle of the picture, 508 metres and the tallest building in the world from 2004 to 2010, with the Xinyi district at its feet and the whole Taipei basin spreading to the mountains behind.
The platform is a short, steep climb from the metro, and it fills every evening with tripods waiting for the blue hour, when the city lights come on around the tower. On New Year's Eve the fireworks fire from the tower itself, and this is the view the whole island watches.
Taipei keeps China Standard Time, UTC+8, with no daylight saving. Blue hour runs from about 17:20 in winter and 18:50 in summer, a European morning; clear days after a cold front, from November to February, give the sharpest skyline. In Chinese the mountain is 象山.
