About this view
This live cam is mounted high on the Martinitoren, the 97-metre tower of Groningen's main church, and looks straight down onto the Grote Markt, the city's central square, with the columns of the Stadhuis, the city hall, at its top edge. From this height the square reads like a map, and the people crossing it are the size of the trees.
Groningen is a student city, about a quarter of its 240,000 residents are students, at a university founded in 1614 and at the Hanze college, and the square shows it: bicycles in rivers, the market days, a stage or a beach-volleyball court set up for a festival, and the terraces on the west side full until the bars close.
