Skylines & Rooftops

A skyline is a city's signature, and live skyline webcams are set high enough to read it whole: from rooftops, hotel towers and the far shore of a bay, with the towers of New York and Chicago, the Gulf cities, Tokyo, the harbour skylines of Sydney and Vancouver and the older ones of Europe, where the tallest things are still spires and domes. What they show best is light. Sunrise picks out the east faces of the towers; the blue hour after sunset, twenty minutes of deep blue sky with every window lit, is the shot the rooftops exist for; and a storm front crossing a skyline, rain drawn like a curtain across half of it, is worth more than a clear day. New York is at its best around 19:30 local time in June and 16:45 in December. Rooftop cameras also see fireworks, eclipses, fog rolling in off the water, and snow, which turns the whole city monochrome.
