Market Square

A brick New England square on a live webcam, at the bottom of a Federal-era seaport an hour north of Boston.

About this view

Market Square is the brick heart of Newburyport, a Federal-era seaport thirty-five miles up the coast from Boston. The live webcam looks across the square's cafe tables toward the shopfronts of State Street and Inn Street, with the Merrimack River running to the sea a block behind them.

It is a town square still doing its actual job: coffee and dog walkers in the morning, shoppers through the afternoon, buskers and dinner crowds after six. The whole downtown burned in 1811 and was rebuilt in brick. What you are looking at is the rebuild, largely unchanged since.

New England runs on Eastern Time, UTC−5 and UTC−4 in summer. Autumn is why people come: the foliage peaks through October and the square fills. Winter turns it into the snow-globe version of itself, which the town leans into with lights from Thanksgiving onward.
