Brest, the naval city at the western tip of Brittany, sits above one of the finest natural harbours in Europe, the Rade de Brest, and the live webcams in Brest show a port city rebuilt on a grid: the squares and avenues of the centre, the rue de Siam running down to the drawbridge at Recouvrance, the naval base and the port along the waterfront, the marina, and the rade itself, where the weather arrives off the Atlantic in bands. Brest keeps Central European Time, UTC+1, UTC+2 in summer; the squares are busiest at lunchtime and early evening, and June evenings stay light past 20:00 UTC. The city was more than 90 per cent destroyed in 1944, and some 140,000 people live in the one rebuilt since. May to September is the season; every four years in July the Fêtes maritimes fill the port with tall ships, next in 2028.
