Collins Avenue is the spine of South Beach, running the length of Miami Beach one block back from the sand. The camera looks out over the corner of it that sits inside the Art Deco Historic District — roughly 800 preserved buildings from the 1930s, one of the densest concentrations of the style anywhere, and the reason this neighbourhood looks like nowhere else in America.
The street performs in shifts. Convertibles and scooters crawl past in daylight, beachgoers cross with towels and folding chairs, and the pastel facades pick up whatever the Florida sky is doing. After dark the neon along the Deco frontages switches on and the pavement fills with people heading for Ocean Drive, one block east.
