Coral City Camera, PortMiami

An underwater live webcam on corals and reef fish at the shoreline of PortMiami, three metres down.

About this view

Three metres under the surface at the east end of PortMiami, the busiest passenger port in the world, a camera looks at a reef that grew in the middle of a city. Coral Morphologic placed it along the shoreline in late 2019 as an art and science project, and since then the live cam has shown corals and reef fish living beside the port's shipping channel.

The channel beside the port links Biscayne Bay to the Atlantic, so the water in front of the lens changes with every tide, from clear to cloudy and back. Fish drift past alone and in schools, and on a bright day the light comes down through the surface in shifting bands.

Miami keeps Eastern Time, UTC−5, UTC−4 in summer. The reef shows best in the middle of the day, when the sun is highest over the water, and summer brings the warmest water of the year. Many of Florida's corals spawn a few nights after the August and September full moons.
