Guide Dog Puppy Nursery, Sylmar

Guide Dogs of America breeds and trains guide dogs for people who are blind or visually impaired, from its headquarters in Sylmar, in the northern San Fernando Valley of Los Angeles, and all its programmes are provided at no cost to the people who receive a dog. This live cam watches the nursery, where puppies spend their first eight weeks.

Those weeks are the start of an early socialisation programme that introduces the puppies to new sights, sounds and textures, the groundwork for a dog that will one day lead someone around obstacles while its handler does the navigating.

The school was founded in 1948 as International Guiding Eyes by Joseph Jones Sr., with the backing of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers. Sylmar keeps Pacific Time, UTC−8, UTC−7 in summer. The litter moves between two kennel runs every day so that each can be disinfected for 24 hours, so on some days the puppies are on the school's other camera.
