The Tropical Reef Habitat is the largest exhibit at the Aquarium of the Pacific in Long Beach: 350,000 gallons built to reproduce Blue Corner, a wall dive off the coast of Palau, and home to more than a thousand animals. The camera looks straight into the main window.
It reads like a reef because it is stocked like one. Anthias hang in clouds over the coral heads, wrasse work the rock, a zebra shark rests on the sand, and rays cut across the open water. Divers enter the tank for feeding and talks, which turns the whole population toward the glass at once.
California runs on Pacific Time, UTC−8 and UTC−7 in summer. Diver presentations are the events worth timing — the aquarium publishes the schedule — and feeding brings everything out of the rock. Outside those hours it settles into something close to a screensaver, which is the point.
