Long Beach, California, is the port city at the southern edge of Los Angeles County, and its live webcams look somewhere unexpected: not at the container cranes or the Queen Mary but into the water itself, through the glass of the aquarium on the waterfront. The great reef tanks of the aquarium are the draw, walls of coral built to copy Pacific dive sites, with sharks, rays and a thousand smaller fish moving through them. The city keeps Pacific Time, UTC−8, UTC−7 in summer; the tank is lit during opening hours, roughly nine to five local, which is evening in Europe and afternoon on the East Coast, and the divers who clean and feed it appear on a daily schedule.
