About this view
A fruit table at the Canopy Lodge in El Valle de Antón, a town that sits inside the crater of an extinct volcano in central Panama. Bananas go out on the platform each morning and the surrounding cloud forest arrives to eat them, a few metres from the camera.
The turnover is relentless and the colours are absurd. Blue-grey and crimson-backed tanagers, thick-billed euphonias, honeycreepers in electric blue and green, motmots waiting their turn on a branch. A keel-billed toucan turns up for the bananas and clears the table by arriving. Squirrels and the occasional agouti raid the platform from below. Everything watches everything else, and a hawk overhead empties the table in a second.
Panama runs on Eastern Time year-round, UTC−5, with no daylight saving. Dawn is the busiest hour, and the feeder refills through the day. The dry season, roughly January to April, brings the clearest light; the wet months bring migrants down from North America.
