Fisherman's Village, Bophut

Century-old Sino-Portuguese shophouses, lanterns and street life on Samui's north coast, on a live webcam.

About this view

Fisherman's Village is the old heart of Bophut, on Koh Samui's north coast: one street of Sino-Portuguese shophouses built by Chinese merchants in the early twentieth century, now among the best-preserved in the Gulf of Thailand. The wooden pier here once loaded coconuts for the mainland.

The timber facades have become boutique hotels, galleries, coffee shops and seafood restaurants, several still run by descendants of the fishing families the village is named for. Strung with lights and lanterns after dark, the street looks nothing like the resort strips elsewhere on the island.

Friday is the night on this live cam. The Bophut Walking Street market takes over from about 5pm to 10pm and can draw more than 15,000 people on a peak high-season evening. Thailand runs on UTC+7, so that market falls in the European lunchtime and early afternoon.
