Big Buddha, Koh Samui

The Big Buddha of Koh Samui, the 12-metre golden statue on its islet off Bang Rak, on a 4K live webcam.

About this view

Across the water from a rooftop in Bang Rak, on the north coast of Koh Samui, this live camera in 4K looks at Wat Phra Yai, the Big Buddha temple. The statue is the island's landmark: 12 metres of gold-painted Buddha seated in the Mara posture on a small islet, Ko Faan, joined to Samui by a causeway three kilometres north of the airport, and visible from arriving flights.

The temple is a working one as much as a sight: monks at their morning rounds, families climbing the naga staircase, the bells rung by visitors at the top, and the tour groups arriving mid-morning. In front of it the fishing boats of Bang Rak come and go, and the ferries to Koh Phangan pass along the coast.

Samui keeps Indochina Time, UTC+7, with no daylight saving. The statue faces the morning light, so the hours after sunrise, around 23:30 UTC, are the clearest, and the temple is lit after dark; Buddhist holy days and Songkran in April bring the crowds. In Thai the temple is วัดพระใหญ่, Wat Phra Yai, and visitors search webcam Koh Samui Big Buddha.
