About this view
Embleton is a village on the Northumberland coast of England, a mile from the ruins of Dunstanburgh Castle, in the county that holds Europe's largest Dark Sky Park: some 1,480 km² of protected night. This live webcam points north across the fields, an old ruined cottage in the foreground to give the sky a scale.
At 55°N the aurora borealis is a visitor, not a resident: it takes a strong storm, Kp 6 or more, to push the oval this far south, and on those nights the northern lights fill the frame. Between storms the 24/7 feed is a proper sky watch, the Milky Way in autumn and meteor showers on schedule.
