Above & Beyond

Height changes everything, and the live aerial webcams here look down from as high as anything can be placed: cameras in orbit, 400 kilometres up and moving at 28,000 kilometres an hour, then towers, mountain ridges, aerial tramways, lighthouses and rooftops with a whole coastline or city spread underneath. From orbit the planet turns beneath you in ninety-minute laps, sixteen sunrises and sunsets a day, with the dark side lit by cities and lightning; the screen is black for the half-hour of each lap spent over the night side, which is normal, not a fault. From a tower or a ridge the interest is scale: weather crossing a valley, ships on a bay, a city grid at night. Clear, cold days give the longest views; haze in summer afternoons shortens them; and dawn from height, with the shadows long, is worth setting an alarm for.
