Mount Katahdin Night Sky

Maine's highest peak under a dark-sky night: stars, meteors, and the aurora on the big nights.

About this view

Mount Katahdin is Maine's highest point at 5,269 ft (1,606 m) and the northern end of the Appalachian Trail. This live webcam sits on the shore of Millinocket Lake and faces north toward the mountain, next door to New England's first International Dark Sky Sanctuary.

It is a full-frame camera on a fast 24 mm lens, built for the dark, which is why the sky looks brighter on this stream than it does to the naked eye: the Milky Way over the peak, the Perseids in August, the Geminids in December, and on the biggest storms, Kp 8, the aurora borealis reaching down to 45°N.

Eastern time is UTC−5, UTC−4 in summer. The sky is darkest from about 10 pm, new-moon weeks are best for stars, and any geomagnetic alert is worth opening the 24/7 live stream for: the northern lights are rare here, and unforgettable.
