About this view
This nest cam looks straight into an osprey nest on a platform at the edge of Hog Island, the Audubon camp in Muscongus Bay on the Maine coast, with the water of the bay behind it. Ospreys eat almost nothing but fish, and the pair here fishes the bay in plain view of the nest, bringing the catch back head first.
The pair returns from South America in April, lays in May, and the chicks hatch in June; July is the month of constant feeding, and by August the young are exercising their wings on the rim before their first flights. Bald eagles and gulls test the nest, and the adults' alarm calls are the sound of the summer.
Hog Island keeps Eastern Time, UTC−5, UTC−4 in summer. The nest is busiest in the early morning and the hours before dusk, when the fish come in, and it is occupied from April to about September; through the winter the platform stands empty above the bay until the birds come back.
