Ruidoso sits at 6,920 feet in the Sierra Blanca range of southern New Mexico, high enough that ponderosa pine replaces desert entirely. It takes its name from the Rio Ruidoso — Spanish for noisy river — the stream that runs through the village.
Sierra Blanca Peak rises to 11,981 feet above it and holds snow long into spring. The village is a mountain resort in both seasons: Ski Apache above it in winter, and Ruidoso Downs racetrack below, which each Labor Day weekend runs the All-American Futurity, the richest Quarter Horse race in the United States.
