Hagafell, Reykjanes
The Sundhnúkur crater row at Hagafell on a live webcam: Iceland's Reykjanes peninsula, where eruptions return.
About this view
Nine eruptions in twenty months, and the ground still rising: the Sundhnúkur crater row northeast of Grindavík, on Iceland's Reykjanes peninsula, is the most watched volcanic ground on Earth, and this live webcam from the newspaper Morgunblaðið looks at it close up from Hagafell. The first fissure opened here on 18 December 2023; the ninth eruption ran from 16 July to 5 August 2025.
Between eruptions the view is the black lava fields, the new craters steaming, the lights of the Svartsengi power plant and the evacuated town of Grindavík, and the weather of the North Atlantic crossing it all. When the ground opens again, the fountains and the lava rivers fill the picture within the hour, day or night.
Iceland keeps UTC+0 all year, with no daylight saving. The winter dark, from about 16:00 UTC in December, is when a fissure shows best and when the aurora stands over the lava field; the midnight sun of June makes the whole thing visible around the clock. Icelanders write Sundhnúkagígar, and visitors search Grindavík volcano live cam.
