About this view
Vervet is a new waterfront neighbourhood on the eastern shore of Tromsøya, just north of the city centre, and this live cam takes in its harbour basin: apartment blocks along the quay, the strait of Tromsøysundet beyond them, and the Tromsø Bridge running across to the mainland under the mountains. The bridge is 1,036 metres long, with 58 spans and 38 metres of clearance for the ships passing beneath it.
The picture is Arctic weather as much as architecture: cloud sits on the mountains or lifts off them, snow and rain move in across the strait, and the water of the basin follows the colour of the sky from grey to deep blue.
Tromsø keeps Central European Time, UTC+1, UTC+2 in summer. Between late November and mid-January the sun never clears the horizon and the view sits in a blue half-light at midday; from late May to late July it never sets. The city lies under the auroral oval, and the northern lights season runs from September to March.
