Kilpisjärvi, the last village in Finland's northwestern arm where the country squeezes between Sweden and Norway, is one of the surest places on Earth to see the aurora, and the live webcams in Kilpisjärvi face north for it: the sky above the lake and the fells, with the flat-topped bulk of Saana to one side, waiting for the green to arrive. Watching it live is the cheapest aurora trip there is. The village keeps Eastern European Time, UTC+2, UTC+3 in summer; in midwinter the sky is dark enough by 13:00 UTC and stays that way until the next morning, and the lights are most often out between 19:00 and 23:00 UTC. Saana rises to 1,029 metres straight from the lakeshore, and the Sámi name for the place is Gilbbesjávri. September to March is aurora season; the polar night runs from mid-December into early January.
