Simbavati Waterside
A riverbank camera in the Klaserie, one of Greater Kruger's quieter reserves.
About this view
The Klaserie is one of the largest private reserves inside the Greater Kruger and one of the least crowded, with far fewer lodges per hectare than the Sabi Sand to its south. This camera sits on the water at Simbavati, looking along a riverbank rather than at an open pan.
A river frontage gives a different cast to a waterhole. Elephants come to drink and then stay to bathe and cross; hippo and crocodile hold the deeper stretches; and the tree cover along the bank brings in bushbuck, nyala, monkeys and a heavy bird presence, particularly kingfishers and herons.
South Africa is UTC+2. Winter, from May to September, drops the water level and the leaf cover together, which makes the dry months the most reliable for seeing what comes down to the bank.
