Lentorre, South Rift
Spring water in Kenya's South Rift, on Maasai land where livestock and wildlife share ground.
About this view
Lentorre sits in the Olkiramatian Conservancy, a remote stretch of Kenya's South Rift below the Nguruman escarpment, where springs feed riverine forest in otherwise dry country. This is community land: the conservancy was set up by the local Maasai, and it is one of the few places in Africa where wildlife and Maasai livestock genuinely share the same ground.
The camera covers water, and the day divides in two. Zebra, antelope and primates come through the daylight hours, and the character changes after dark, when elephant, buffalo and the predators — lion, leopard, hyena — take over. The wider area holds an unusually long list of plains game, from eland and gerenuk to both greater and lesser kudu.
Kenya is UTC+3, on the equator, so light comes and goes near 6am and 6pm year-round. The dry months push everything toward the springs.
