Finch Hattons, Tsavo West
Spring-fed pools in Tsavo, home of the red elephants, under Kilimanjaro.
About this view
Tsavo is Kenya's largest protected wilderness, more than 22,000 square kilometres of red soil, lava flow and scrub between Nairobi and the coast. Its elephants are famous for looking wrong: they dust-bathe in the park's fine red volcanic earth and come out ochre, which is why they are known as the red elephants of Tsavo.
This camera sits at Finch Hattons, a camp built on spring-fed pools in Tsavo West, at the foot of the Chyulu Hills. The springs are permanent water in a dry park, so hippo hold the pools and everything else comes to them. On clear mornings Kilimanjaro stands over the whole scene from across the Tanzanian border.
Kenya is UTC+3. The dry seasons — roughly January to March and July to October — pull game to the springs; midday is hot and quiet, and the animals move at either end of the day.
