GRACE Gorilla Sanctuary
Rescued Grauer's gorillas in a forest habitat in eastern Congo, on a live webcam from the sanctuary.
About this view
GRACE is the only sanctuary in the world for rescued Grauer's gorillas, in the forest near Kasugho in North Kivu, eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, and this live cam watches one of its two forest habitats.
Grauer's gorilla, also called the eastern lowland gorilla, is the largest of the gorilla subspecies and critically endangered, found nowhere but this part of the Congo. The gorillas here arrived as orphans of poaching, and the sanctuary raises them in a group, with Congolese caregivers, so that they learn to live as gorillas rather than as pets. The sanctuary also works with the villages around the forest, on the reasoning that the wild gorillas' future depends on their neighbours.
North Kivu keeps Central Africa Time, UTC+2, all year, so first light in the forest comes while Europe sleeps. The equator runs through this region, which is why the light barely shifts across the year, and the drier months run from June to September.
