Hwange covers roughly 14,600 square kilometres and holds one of the largest elephant populations in Africa, usually given as around 45,000 animals. The dry season, August to October, is the time to watch, when the pans shrink and everything with legs walks to the water; the rains from November to March scatter the herds.
