Liberty Bell

The cracked bell of American independence, in its glass house on Independence Mall on a live webcam.

About this view

About two million people a year file past the Liberty Bell, and this live webcam watches them do it. The bell weighs roughly 2,080 pounds and measures about twelve feet around the lip; the crack everyone comes to see runs some 24 inches up from the rim.

It was commissioned in 1751 for the Pennsylvania State House, the building now called Independence Hall, visible through the glass behind it. The famous fracture opened in the 1840s and widened in 1846, after the bell was rung for Washington's birthday; it has not been sounded since. It has sat in the purpose-built Liberty Bell Center since 2003.

The centre keeps daytime hours on Eastern time, UTC−5, so mornings and afternoons are when the queue moves through frame. Independence Day week is the one to watch, when the mall around it fills.
