The town's own live webcam over the beach at Koksijde-Bad, on the Belgian coast a few kilometres from the French border. Belgium has only about 65 kilometres of coastline, and nearly all of it is one continuous run of fine sand backed by dunes and apartment blocks: a coast built for day trips, with a tram that runs the whole length of it.
The tide does the choreography. At low water the beach goes out far enough for sand yachts and kite buggies; at high water it narrows to a strip below the promenade. Neighbouring Oostduinkerke still fishes for shrimp on horseback, a practice on the UNESCO intangible heritage list.
Summer weekends fill the sand. The rest of the year belongs to walkers, dogs and the North Sea weather, which arrives fast (UTC+1, +2 in summer). Winter storms are worth catching: the sea comes right up the beach.
