A live webcam over náměstí Horníků, Miners' Square, in Rtyně v Podkrkonoší, a small town of some 3,000 people under the Jestřebí hills in the northeast of Bohemia. The name is earned: black coal was found here in 1590 and mined for exactly four centuries, until the last pit closed in 1990, and the town museum keeps the largest mining exhibition in the region.
The square is the town's everyday life in one frame: the bus stop and the shops, the church tower behind, market days and the Christmas tree in December, and the signpost where two educational trails set off into the hills and the old mine workings. Not a tourist square, which is the point, an ordinary Czech town going about its day.
Central European Time, UTC+1, UTC+2 in summer. Mornings bring the school run and the buses; the hills behind hold snow from December to March and go green in May. The town was Hertiny until 1931.
