Boteti River at Moela
The Boteti River on the zebra migration route, live from a lodge on its bank in Botswana.
About this view
A live webcam on the bank of the Boteti River, the thin ribbon of water on the western edge of the Makgadikgadi that decides where Botswana's zebra go. The country's zebra migration is the longest known land migration in Africa, a round trip of some 500 kilometres between the Okavango and these pans.
When the herds are here they come to the river in their thousands, in long nervous files that break and re-form at the water. Elephants push through the same crossings, and the antelope, wildebeest and predators that follow the migration fill the gaps between.
Timing is everything: the zebra arrive with the rains, roughly December to April, and drift back north as the pans dry (UTC+2, no daylight saving). Outside that window the river holds the resident animals instead — still busy, just not a migration.
