Iceberg Cam, Disko Bay
Icebergs the size of buildings drifting out of the world’s most productive glacier, in 4K.
About this view
Ilulissat is simply the Greenlandic word for icebergs, and this camera shows why. It looks out over the water that collects the ice from Sermeq Kujalleq, one of the fastest-moving glaciers on Earth: the fjord just south of town discharges around 35 cubic kilometres of ice a year, roughly a tenth of everything that calves off Greenland.
The bergs arrive as a slow parade, and some of them are the size of apartment blocks. Many run aground on the shallow sill at the mouth of the fjord and sit there for weeks until they break up or float free; others roll over without warning, which is the moment regular viewers wait for. In summer humpback and minke whales work the same water between them.
Greenland here runs two hours behind UTC, one in summer. The town sits about 300 kilometres north of the Arctic Circle, so this 24/7 live cam swings between extremes: from late May to late July the sun never sets and the ice glows all night, while around the winter solstice it never rises at all — a long blue dusk, with the aurora above it on clear nights.
