Minnetonka Ice Arena, Rink A

Rink A of the Minnetonka Ice Arena on a live webcam: hockey, figure skating and lessons west of Minneapolis.

About this view

Minnetonka Ice Arena is the city rink of Minnetonka, a suburb of some 54,000 people west of Minneapolis, and this live cam watches Rink A, the older of its two sheets of ice. Rink A opened in 1970 and spent most of its first two years closed: a flaw in the roof beams made the building unsafe under the weight of snow until repairs were finished in 1972.

Both rinks run all year. The schedule is the classic mix of a northern suburb: skating lessons, figure skaters working on their programmes, hockey practices, and adult open hockey. The second rink began life as an inflatable dome over outdoor ice and became a permanent building in 1989.

Minnetonka keeps Central Time, UTC−6, UTC−5 in summer, so the evening sessions fall in the European night. The city takes its name from Lake Minnetonka, from the Dakota words for big water, which lies along its western edge, and Minnesota's hockey season runs through the winter, from November to March.
