About this view
The St. Augustine Alligator Farm has been open since 1893, which makes it one of the oldest attractions in Florida. The camera looks over its swamp boardwalk: alligators stacked on the banks below, and a wild wading-bird colony nesting in the trees directly above them.
That arrangement is not an exhibit, it is a bargain the birds made. Herons, egrets and roseate spoonbills nest here by choice, because raccoons and snakes will not cross a pond full of alligators to raid a nest. So you watch chicks being fed a few metres above the animals that make it safe.
Florida runs on Eastern Time, UTC−5 and UTC−4 in summer. Rookery season runs from roughly March to June and it is the reason to watch: courtship plumage, nest building, then a canopy of noise. Outside it the alligators carry the frame on their own, mostly by not moving.
