Little Cubs Field, Freeport

Wrigley Field shrunk for children, ivy and scoreboard included, on a live webcam in a Freeport park.

About this view

Little Cubs Field is Wrigley Field made small: a youth ballpark in Read Park, in Freeport, Illinois, opened in 2008 and built to copy 46 features of the home of the Chicago Cubs, and this live cam looks over it. Ivy, brick, box seats, scoreboard and entry sign are all there, and some of the dirt and sod came from the real field.

The dimensions give the scale away: 100 feet down the foul lines and 122 feet to the centre-field wall, sized for Little League. Games and practices fill the season, and outside them the field is open to visitors at no cost or rented for parties and picnics. It was a local man's idea, and the town built it together.

Freeport keeps Central Time, UTC−6, UTC−5 in summer, so an evening game here starts in the European small hours. The baseball season runs from spring into late summer, and in winter the field lies under the snow of northern Illinois.
