Pittsburgh Zoo Penguins

Penguins swimming, arguing and standing about on a live webcam at the PPG Aquarium in Pittsburgh.

About this view

The PPG Aquarium at the Pittsburgh Zoo keeps a cold-water penguin colony, and this live webcam watches their pool from the visitor side of the glass. You get both halves of penguin life at once: the comic upright shuffling on rock, and the sudden switch to something built entirely for water.

Penguins are social to the point of soap opera. There are disputes over prime standing spots, long stretches of preening, and the rush when a keeper arrives at feeding time. Underwater they stop being funny and start being fast, turning on the spot and using their wings the way other birds use them for flight.

Pittsburgh runs on Eastern Time, UTC−5 and UTC−4 in summer. Feeding times are the peak, and the birds are liveliest in the morning; the pool never closes, so late at night you get the sleeping version. Nesting season brings the pebble economy: these are stone-nesters, every stone is already spoken for, and the thieving is constant.
