The live road webcams here move, or watch the road for those who do: cab-ride cameras on the front of trains climbing through valleys, dashcam drives through cities at night and along coast roads, and fixed cameras on the passes, bridges and scenic highways that drivers check before setting off. A moving picture is a different thing to watch. The scenery keeps changing, the destination is somewhere real, and a drive that started at dawn ends in the evening light three hundred kilometres away. Road conditions are the practical use: a pass that is closed by snow, a coast road in fog, a highway at a standstill, all visible before the trip. Winter shows the plough trucks and the chains; summer the motorcycles and the traffic on the mountain roads; and night driving through a city, with the wet streets reflecting the neon, is the most-watched picture of the kind.
