Cresswell, at the southern end of Druridge Bay on the Northumberland coast, is a village of a couple of hundred people with one great asset: a northern horizon over the North Sea with almost no light on it. The live webcams in Cresswell face that horizon from the edge of the village, where the aurora appears when a solar storm reaches England, along with noctilucent clouds in midsummer and, on ordinary nights, more stars than most of the country ever sees. Cresswell keeps Greenwich Mean Time, UTC+0, and UTC+1 in British summer, so the dark starts as early as four in the afternoon in December and barely arrives at all in June. Druridge Bay runs some seven miles of empty sand behind the dunes. September to March for the aurora, June and July for the noctilucent clouds, and any summer day for the beach.
