Siena, the Gothic hill town in the heart of Tuscany, is built around one of the finest squares in Italy, and the live webcams in Siena keep the Piazza del Campo in view: the shell-shaped brick slope, the tower above it, the tourists sprawled on the paving at midday and the passeggiata circling it in the evening. Twice a year, on 2 July and 16 August, the square becomes a racetrack: ten of the city's seventeen contrade run the Palio, three laps and about ninety seconds, before a crowd packed into the centre since morning. The rest of the year the Torre del Mangia, at some 87 metres, is the tallest thing for miles. May to September is the season to watch.
